We are issuing this joint statement to address and clarify a false report that was recently circulated on social media platforms, particularly on Facebook, regarding an alleged active shooter incident at or near Yankton Middle School.
Please be assured that this report is completely false. At no point was there an active shooter situation at or near the Yankton Middle School, nor were any students, staff, or members of the community in any danger. Law enforcement officers and school officials immediately responded to the report. This report came at a time when the Yankton Middle School and Law Enforcement were practicing a scheduled active threat drill.
In today’s digital age, rumors and misinformation can spread quickly, causing unnecessary panic. We urge parents, students, and community members to rely on official communication channels from the Yankton School District and local authorities for accurate information. Should there be any emergency situation, we will promptly communicate through trusted and verified means, such as official school district notifications, local law enforcement bulletins, and news outlets.
We take all reports of this nature seriously, and an investigation into the origin of the false report is currently underway. Those responsible for spreading this misinformation may face legal consequences for creating unnecessary fear and disruption within our community.
Our primary concern is the safety and security of our students and staff. The Yankton School District continues to work closely with local authorities to maintain a safe learning environment for all.
We thank you for your continued support and vigilance. Please do not hesitate to contact the Yankton School District or the Yankton Police Department if you have any concerns or questions.
